A Starry Wish Deferred

I went on a short adventure with a local hiking club last Friday evening to Cleveland, GA to the top of Mt. Yonah, with the hope of viewing the Perseid meteor shower.

The ascent was absolutely breathtaking, we arrived close to the top just in time to witness a beautiful sunset and then up to the summit (approx. 3200’) just in time to pitch tents before nightfall. The anticipation was high, the moon was bright, the stars were out too.

He numbers the stars in the sky and calls them each by name.

We waited–hours, but nothing. We tried viewing the sky from different sides of the mountain, still nothing. Well, not nothing exactly, we did end up seeing the International Space Station, (now these folks had a front row seat for some Perseid action). We even stayed up until 2 because someone “heard” that this was when we were supposed to see it.

Nothing.

We did, however, see Jupiter bright, clear and lovely before saying goodnight.

The heavens declare the glory of God.

The next morning I got up early and stayed up, watching the sun rise and filter through the trees.

His mercies are new every morning.

I’m pretty sure I saw everything I needed to.
